transformation of building into community school: primary school, preschool, and daycare center
The Brede Reus community school is housed in two buildings with a schoolyard between them. On Noorderstraat are the 17th-century Wevershuizen buildings, designed by architect Philips Vingboons, which have long served as offices. The primary school De Kleine Reus is now located at Looierstraat 9. Both complexes house the various components of the community school: the primary school, after-school care, a nursery, and a
community center.
An important design task is to ‘connect’ the various functions, and therefore also the two buildings, in order to enable optimal cooperation between the different institutions. The courtyard functions as the heart of the community school, but also offers space for neighborhood events. The small theater and gym in the complex contribute to this. OIII has made design proposals to make the classrooms suitable for use for after-school care and other activities after school hours: a work situation is transformed into a cozy living room atmosphere. This enables efficient use of space. The monuments, with their clear dimensions and specific old elements, allow for a characterful interior.
