renovation and interior design of Cartier's office on the Amsterdam canal
Three different canal houses have been merged into one office building. The building is composed of very dissimilar historical fragments, ranging from Baroque to the 1950s. The introduction of a dominant atrium across the full width of the middle building connects these fragments. The ‘museum-like’ intervention connects the monumental staircase of the bel-etage in a spatial sense with the glass canopy on the sixth floor. This floor houses the company restaurant and conference room, both with a phenomenal view over the rooftops of Amsterdam.
Daylight penetrates through the glass canopy into the heart of each floor. The addition of (frosted) glass walls and oak floors around the atrium emphasizes the layered character of the building and does justice to Cartier's image: traditional design, produced and marketed using modern technology.
