renovation and expansion of Het Nieuwe Lyceum

Het Nieuwe Lyceum is an existing HAVO and VWO school building that has been renovated and expanded. Through a careful combination of renovation, demolition, and new construction, the spatial cohesion that had been lost over the years has been restored. It has also given the complex a new heart that serves as the vibrant center of the school community. The functional and educational requirements have been clearly translated into a design that has transformed a spatially fragmented and cluttered building into a modern educational environment.  In addition, the valuable elements of the existing architecture have been restored, and the new building fits seamlessly into the existing structure.

The renovation gives shape to a new educational setup, with all students having their own place in a “home classroom.” No longer does the entire student population move from one classroom to another. The teachers move around.

Only the subject clusters of science, art and culture, and physical education have their own teaching wing. This is because these subjects require an environment with special facilities.
Various user groups were involved in the design process, each with their own wishes and needs. The result is a school building that consists of small-scale, recognizable learning environments, while at the same time creating a strong sense of cohesion and shared identity
