new school in Crooswijk
The new school building is part of a building block with clear building lines that border Van Meekerenstraat and Alberta Wellingpad. In our proposal, the street walls on these building lines have a variation in height to create a characteristic silhouette. It makes the different functions in the building visible and also provides a view of the private terraces and courtyard behind the building line. Thus, the street wall does not form a dense and inaccessible wall, but a transparent boundary between the public and private space. Also, the variation in height gives the building a friendly and playful scale.
The plan includes the possibility to enlarge or reduce the part that can be used separately from the school outside school hours. The changing rooms and the entrance to the gym are located directly at the entrance to the Van Meekerenstraat, the media library is directly behind it. If we bring a partition in the central corridor a little further into the building, the technology room and central space could also be used for community activities. When moving into the central rooms, however, some provisions will have to be made to safely shield adjacent rooms from intrusion.

1/4
modular structure and adaptability
There was an explicit request in this assignment to create a flexible building that can be adapted in the future to meet changing needs in education. This can be facilitated in several ways. First, the spaces have interchangeable uses due to the favorable proportions and regular shape.
In addition, the layout is modular, with other spaces being created by moving or adding walls. It should be investigated whether modular system walls can be used here, as is already common in vocational education. With the changing views on the workplace, large quantities of such system walls are currently available as reusable elements, making this principle financially feasible for primary education as well. It also means that the adaptability of the building is optimal.
