renovation of VMBO school

The existing building had a rigid and unambiguous structure, tailored to classroom education combined with practical lessons. This was reflected in the spatial layout and appearance of the building: repetitive stacked classrooms and an attached workshop. There was a need for a more flexible, open, and extroverted building.

Both the spatial structure and the image no longer matched the changing VMBO.

The existing building mass has been horizontally divided into two volumes and given a more abstract interpretation that aligns with the scale and proportion of the surroundings. As a result, the building is no longer read unambiguously as a collection of classrooms, but instead expresses the school as a dynamic whole.

The ground floor façade has been completely replaced due to its poor physical condition.

Instead of closed façades, the new expression is transparent and colorful. Outdoor spaces have been added on each floor, making the building lively and its functions more legible: an outdoor area for the restaurant, practice terraces for the creative subjects, and a lounge terrace by the top-floor lounge space signal that more goes on in the building than just traditional classroom teaching.

The existing double corridor structure has largely been abandoned; circulation areas now alternate with classrooms, meeting spots, study areas, and break spaces, resulting in a dynamic and flowing composition of spaces and daylight.

Large voids have been created in the floors, generating a three-dimensional spatial experience rather than a series of stacked teaching levels. Together with new large skylights, the voids make the building feel light and transparent.

By opening up the floorplans and levels—especially in the center of the building—the school gains a heart. The auditorium is no longer just one of the functions along a corridor, but together with the entrance, now forms the core of the school.
