personal housing in the Westerhonk care area

Westerhonk has undergone a major transformation. A new urban development plan and reverse integration have transformed the character of the area into an open and inviting one. In a park-like environment, private sector housing, neighborhood functions, and care homes coexist. Sheltered housing for people with intellectual disabilities and day care facilities are located in an open space in a wooded area. The specific target group prompted Oᶦᶦᶦ architects to seize the opportunity to let the design ‘grow’ through collaboration, by participating in residential groups and intensive exchanges between team leaders, the construction agency, clients, and advisors.

The floor plans were developed based on the changing needs of the residents. Each residential group is characterized by different degrees of individual and communal spaces. The interconnection, stacking, and interlocking of these spaces creates a building that forms a coherent whole while also being individually identifiable. The architecture is therefore a literal result of the way in which residents and staff live and work together.
