development combination of shops and homes

A design that fits seamlessly into the small-scale buildings in the center of Breukelen was the most important criterion in a competition won by Oᶦᶦᶦ. The ground floor of this plan consists mainly of shops. Above that are homes surrounding a courtyard that is actually the roof of the supermarket. This courtyard is connected to the surrounding streets by two external staircases, so that this courtyard forms part of the street pattern. By giving the facades of the homes and shops an individual appearance, through differences in detailing and use of materials, street walls are created that are a continuation of the existing streets in terms of scale and texture, while also striving for a contemporary look.
